Your Child's First Trial Class: What to Expect

What happens, what to bring, and how to help a nervous kid walk in

Why We Offer Free Trials in the First Place

No website, review, or brochure can answer the only question that matters: will YOUR child light up in this room?

That's why our trial class is free. Not a discounted sample, not a sales pitch with children present — a real class, with the real teacher, alongside the kids who'd be your child's actual classmates. You see the environment as it is. We get to meet your child. Everyone decides with real information.

About half of parents tell us they knew within twenty minutes. We believe them, because we can usually see it too.

What Actually Happens in the Hour

Your child joins a regularly scheduled class — 60 minutes, capped at 12 students, grouped by age. Here's the typical arc:

First, a warm-up game. Always a game, always low-stakes, designed so a brand-new kid can participate without knowing anyone or anything. This is where nerves dissolve — usually within minutes, because it's hard to stay anxious during a game about being statues or passing an invisible ball.

Then the core work, matched to the discipline: theater games and improvisation, movement and choreography basics, rhythm and song. New students are invited into everything, forced into nothing. Our teachers have onboarded hundreds of first-timers; letting a child watch for ten minutes before joining is normal and completely fine.

Finally, some form of sharing — showing a move, a scene moment, a sound the group made together. Kids leave with something they did, not just something they saw.

    Practical Details Parents Ask About

What to wear: comfortable clothes your child can move in. For dance, leggings or sweatpants with a fitted top work well. No street shoes in the studio — dance shoes, socks, or bare feet are all fine.

What to bring: a water bottle and nothing else. No experience, no gear, no prepared anything.

Can you stay? For young or nervous kids, yes — parents can settle in until their child is comfortable. Fair warning from experience: most kids wave you off far sooner than you expect. We also hold free open classes periodically where parents observe the whole session.

Where and when: our studio is at 325 E 65th Street on the Upper East Side. Classes run Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays — contact us and we'll schedule your trial at whichever class fits your child's age and your family's week.

If Your Child Is Nervous (or Refuses at the Door)

Some children bounce in. Others grip your hand in the hallway. Both are normal, and our teachers have seen every version.

What helps: name the plan, not the pressure ("We're going to watch a fun class. You can join whenever you want"). Arrive a few minutes early so the room isn't already in motion. Let them carry something familiar. And if they only watch the first time — that's a successful trial. Most reluctant kids are fully participating within two classes; watching is how they join.

What doesn't help: bribes tied to performing, comparisons to braver siblings, or apologizing to the teacher about your child. There's nothing to apologize for. The quiet observer in the corner is often the one who surprises everyone at the end-of-semester showcase.

After the Trial: Zero-Pressure Next Steps

If it clicked, enrollment is straightforward: pick the class (or classes) and you're in — $40 a week for one class, with discounted rates for more. Enrollment runs by semester, and if you change your mind in the first month, you pay only for classes attended.

If it didn't click, that's genuinely useful information that cost you nothing but an hour. Maybe it's the wrong discipline (try another — the trial isn't limited to one guess). Maybe it's the wrong season. Either way, you'll know something about your child you didn't know before.

That's the whole design: real class, real information, no pressure. The only thing we ask you to bring is the kid.
