Summer Childcare in NYC: A Working Parent's Guide

Full-day summer programs that are good for your child and your schedule

    The Summer Childcare Problem

School ends in June. Your job doesn't. For working parents in NYC, summer isn't a vacation — it's a logistics puzzle. You need full-day coverage that's reliable, safe, and enriching. And in Manhattan, you need it at a price that doesn't require a second mortgage.

The options feel limited. Big institutional camps are expensive and impersonal. Screen-heavy programs keep kids occupied but not engaged. Babysitters and nannies work but your child sits at home all summer. You want something that solves the childcare problem AND gives your child a summer worth remembering.

What to Look For in a Summer Program

The best summer programs for working parents share a few features:

Full-day schedule that matches work hours. Drop-off in the morning, pick-up in the afternoon. No awkward 12pm endings that require a babysitter for the second half of the day.

Real enrichment, not just babysitting. Your child should be learning, creating, and growing — not sitting in front of a TV with a juice box. Look for programs with professional instructors and structured activities.

Small groups. In a group of 30 kids, your child is a number. In a group of 12, they're known. Small groups mean more attention, more safety, and more meaningful experiences.

Location that works. A camp across the city adds an hour of commuting to your already full day. Look for something in your neighborhood.

Flexibility. Can you sign up for individual weeks? What happens if your child is sick? A good program works with your life, not against it.

Streetcar Summer Camp: Built for Working Families

Our summer camp runs June 29 through September 4, Monday through Friday, with full-day schedules designed around working parents' hours. We're located in Lenox Hill on the Upper East Side — walkable for UES families, easy subway access for the rest of Manhattan.

Every day includes theater, dance, music, and painting in the morning, followed by outdoor activities in Central Park in the afternoon. No screens. Professional instructors. Small groups of no more than 12 kids per session.

We're a nonprofit, which means our prices reflect our mission, not a profit margin. We believe every child deserves a creative summer, and we price accordingly.

Weekly enrollment is available, so you can book the weeks that work for your schedule. And because we know plans change, we work with families when life throws a curveball.
