Kids Classes Two Blocks from the Ella Baker School
Two blocks north of us — the shortest walk of any school on this list.
The Ella Baker School sits on East 67th between 1st and 2nd. We are on East 65th, between 1st and 2nd. That is two blocks on the same avenue — about three minutes, and no avenue to cross.
Ella Baker runs PreK through 8, which is an unusually wide span, and it means a family can have a six-year-old and a twelve-year-old at the same address. That suits us: we teach from age 4 through the teen years, so siblings at opposite ends of the school can both find a class here rather than being split across two neighbourhoods.
The school's own approach — mixed-age classes, children working at their own pace — is close to how our rooms actually run. We cap groups at twelve and the teachers are working performers, so a child who wants to push further is not held to the middle of the room.
The class we'd suggest first: Theater, Sunday 1:30 PM
Theater takes ages 6 to 14, which covers most of Ella Baker's grade span in one class — useful if you have more than one child at the school. That said, a three-minute walk makes the weekday slots genuinely easy here in a way it isn't for families further north, so Tuesday and Thursday are worth asking about too.

- Leave the school on East 67th Street and turn toward 1st Avenue.
- Walk two blocks south on 1st Avenue, past 66th, to East 65th Street.
- Turn right. We are at 325 East 65th, mid-block between 1st and 2nd.
One honest note: we are not a daily after-school or childcare program. We don't cover the 3–6pm window every weekday and we don't provide homework help. What we offer is one meaningful class a week that your child looks forward to — the opposite of another full-time commitment.
