Weekend Classes for P.S. 290 Families
Seventeen blocks south, straight down 1st or 2nd — no crosstown leg.
P.S. 290 is on East 82nd; we are on East 65th. That is seventeen blocks due south with no crosstown leg — a straight walk down 1st or 2nd Avenue, or four stops on the M15 bus.
Seventeen blocks is a real walk after a school day, which is why we usually point Manhattan New School families at the weekend rather than a weekday slot. Sunday afternoon removes the dismissal-to-class scramble entirely: you come when the day is yours, not in the gap between two other things.
The school's reputation is for a progressive, child-led approach, and parents who choose it tend to want the same from an activity. We are not a drilling studio. The semester builds toward one performance in December, and the work between now and then is about making something together rather than rehearsing a routine to a standard.
The class we'd suggest first: Theater, Sunday 1:30 PM
The distance is what decides this one. A weekday class would mean a seventeen-block walk immediately after dismissal, which is the kind of thing that works in September and collapses by November. Sunday at 1:30 has no dismissal attached to it, so the commitment is one you can actually keep in December.
About the theater classGetting here from P.S. 290 (about 17 minutes on foot, less by bus)
- From East 82nd Street, walk to 1st Avenue and head south.
- Continue seventeen blocks to East 65th Street — or take the M15 downtown and get off at 66th.
- Turn west on 65th; we are at 325, between 1st and 2nd.
One honest note: we are not a daily after-school or childcare program. We don't cover the 3–6pm window every weekday and we don't provide homework help. What we offer is one meaningful class a week that your child looks forward to — the opposite of another full-time commitment.
We may be able to arrange pickup from your child's school. It depends on the day, the dismissal time, and how many families need it — so please ask and we'll work out the details with you directly.
